Quinn Cody Makes It A Double At 2016 Sonora Rally

SRCompleting a greatly expanded and highly successful second year of existence, the 2016 Sonora Rally came to a close over the weekend with an awards ceremony in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. The only Dakar-style rally-raid event event held in North America began on Monday, April 4th, in San Luis Rio Colorado. Rally competitors then spent four days racing the unique terrain of the Sonoran desert – including multiple dune runs that varied in sand challenges, a beach run, and ranch roads.

As hoped, the international format and picturesque landscape produced great racing, a world-class adventure and tight finishes in several categories.

Over four days of competition top motorcycle riders Quinn Cody, Ivan Ramirez, Mark Samuels and Steve Hengeveld battled it out with multiple lead changes for the overall Sonora Rally win. Three of the riders — Ramirez, Samuels and Hengeveld — were also waging war to earn a free entry into the 2017 Dakar Rally as part of the international “Dakar Challenge.”

SRAs the final checkered flag fell returning Sonora Rally champion Quinn Cody and his trusty KTM raced their way to the overall victory with a combined time of 12:36:24.

At the finish, it was 23-year old Mexican national Ivan Ramirez who became the first official entrant into the 2017 Dakar by winning the Sonora Rally’s Dakar Challenge. While Cody — who earned a 9th place finish in the 2011 Dakar — edged Ramirez in overall time, Ramirez beat Samuels by 16 minutes and earned his Dakar entry based on an epic final day of racing.

“I had four incredible days in my first participation in the Sonora Rally,” explained Ramirez after the rally’s final checkered flag. “It was a great experience to be able to learn about navigating and battle with Quinn Cody at the same time.”

For the sold-out field of competitors, challenging North America’s premier Dakar-style rally was the successful combination of a traditional rally-raid experience with high-tech wizardry that came together after months of planning and coordination. It was all about time-tested navigation with cutting-edge technology designed to enhance safety and live scoring.

SRThe same was true amongst the four-wheel drivers, as they each tackled the terrain differently based upon their vehicles’ performance advantages and capabilities. Ultimately, the #50 Polaris RZR UTV of Dave Sykes and Ramsey El-Wardini won the overall four-wheel trophy with an overall time of 17:23:31.

“While I normally race high-horsepower. long wheel-travel trucks, bringing a lighter, more nimble four-wheel drive machine like the Polaris RZR made sense for an event like this,” explained Sykes, who was competing in his second Sonora Rally. “There is a reason high-performance UTVs like this are becoming so popular, and it turns out they make a perfect four-wheel entry for a dune-filled race like the Sonora Rally.”

Riders, drivers, teams, families, and staff praised the bivouac hospitality (including specialty dinners, cocktails, wine and craft beer) as well as the camaraderie throughout the event. The enthusiasm and excitement for the growing Sonora Rally was obvious as racers vowed to not only return next year, but to bring their friends and help grow the event into the world class rally-raid organizers have always envisioned.

SRWith plans for an expanded and enhanced event already in the works for 2017, Sonora Rally organizers would like to thank the following for their support: Dakar Rally, State of Sonora, City of San Luis, City of Puerto Penasco, City of Caborca, Sonora Tourism, Cesars Truck Stop, La Faisana, Horno 320, Jh Stake, Baron Balche, Chateau Domecq, Mumms Champagne, San Angel Hotel, Penasco Del Sol Hotel, Instant Mexico Insurance, RIgid Industries, Method Wheels, King Shocks, Tecate, Aldo Shoes, RMS Services and Rally Comp. Also on the list of “thank yous” are Bernie Bolanos, Daniel Gonzalez, Roberto Alcocer, Aventuratravel.com, BoydPhoto.com, Jose Grijalva, AirlandSeaFilms.com, The Rennsport Group, Klaus Rasch/Ernesto Ariza (Race-Dezert.com), Miguel Rico, RPM San Luis Off-Road and the Caselli Foundation.

Darren Skilton and I are so proud of the growth and expansion we have worked so hard to deliver at the 2016 Sonora Rally,” explained co-founder Scott Whitney. “There is a great deal of momentum on our side, and all our efforts in moving forward will be to leverage that momentum into 2017 and beyond. We thank all our racers, corporate partners and support crew for blessing us with their support, enthusiasm and energy.”
